What to see in a day in Salerno
Per visitare Salerno in un giorno potreste pensare di seguire un percorso di trekking urbano che vi introdurrà innanzitutto nell'antica via dei Mercanti, che attraversa l'intero centro storico, oltre che portarvi alla scoperta della Pinacoteca Provinciale, del Duomo di Salerno, del Complesso di Santa Sofia, dei Giardini della Minerva ed, infine, della Villa Comunale. Questo tour vi porterà a visitare Salerno in un giorno così da poter ammirare le caratteristiche di una città che un tempo era sede della prima e più importante scuola medica di tutta Europa, capitale dell'omonimo principato Longobardo durante il Medioevo e Capitale d'Italia durante la seconda Guerra Mondiale.
Castello Arechi
Tra le principali attrazioni di Salerno, vi è al primo posto il Castello Arechi. La vista che si aprirà dinanzi a voi, una volta giunti sulla sommità del castello, vi lascerà stupefatti e senza parole. Dal Castello Arechi, che si affaccia sul golfo di Salerno, potrete godere di un panorama mozzafiato che spazia dalla punta della Costiera Amalfitana, fino ad Agropoli.
Esso rappresenta ancora oggi un autentico esempio di architettura Medievale, ancora ben conservato, e apprezzato in tutta Italia.
È possibile raggiungere il Castello Arechi, dalla stazione centrale, sia usando il trasporto pubblico (bus) che con il taxi.
Di proprietà della Provincia di Salerno, il castello, oggigiorno, si presenta in tutta la sua maestosità, circondato da un bellissimo parco con percorsi naturalistici immersi nella macchia mediterranea.
All'interno di un'area, da pochi anni restaurata, potrete trovare una sala espositiva, una sala per conferenze ed un museo che colleziona antichi materiali del Castello, si tratta per lo più di monete e ceramiche.
CURIOSITÀ: Una tragedia di Ugo Foscolo, la Ricciarda, è ambientata all'interno del Castello Arechi.
Acquedotto Medievale
Ritornando in città, il nostro tour alla scoperta di Salerno in poche ore, inizierà alle porte del centro storico. L'Acquedotto Medievale, popolarmente ribattezzato "Ponti del Diavolo", si dice che sia stato costruito in una sola notte, con l'aiuto dei demoni, dal mago del XII secolo Pietro Barliario. La superstizione popolare racconta che che avventurarsi sotto gli archi tra tramonto e l'alba porterebbe all'incontro con demoni o spiriti maligni.
Pinacoteca Provinciale di Salerno
Procedendo attraverso una delle strade principali dello shopping salernitano, ovvero lungo Via de' Mercanti, suggestiva e antica strada che attraversa tutta la città vecchia, si può raggiungere la Pinacoteca Provinciale di Salerno che si trova al primo piano del Palazzo Pinto del XVII secolo, residenza nobiliare di una delle più importanti famiglie di Salerno. La storia della galleria è in realtà cruciale per l'amministrazione provinciale di Salerno, impegnata non solo nel recupero nella valorizzazione dei dipinti, ma anche nel restauro dell'edificio stesso. La mostra all'interno è divisa cronologicamente in tre sezioni: dal XV al XVIII secolo, Salernitani e Costaioli, e Artisti stranieri.
CONSIGLIO: Potreste approfittare della vicinanza del Museo Virtuale della Scuola Medica Salernitana per una visita.
Duomo di Salerno
Lasciando la galleria e proseguendo a sinistra fino all'incrocio con Via Duomo, a questo punto bisogna svoltare a destra per raggiungere la Cattedrale di Salerno che è situata in Piazza Alfano I. Si tratta del principale luogo di culto cattolico oltre che la seconda attrazione più importante di Salerno. La cattedrale fu costruita in stile romanico nel XI secolo e successivamente rimodificata più volte. All'interno del duomo di Salerno dovete assolutamente vedere la cripta.
CURIOSITÀ: All'interno della cripta è custodito il ceppo, dove secondo la tradizione, furono decapitati tre martiri: Caio, Ante e Fortunato. La leggenda narra che mettendo l'orecchio su di esso, si può ancora udire il rumore del sangue che scorre.
Complesso di Santa Sofia
Lasciando il Duomo, continuiamo il nostro tour dirigendoci verso Piazza Alfano I, una volta qui svoltando a sinistra ci troveremo in Piazza Abate Conforti, dove è ospitato il famoso Complesso Monumentale di Santa Sofia. Il complesso fu costruito alla fine del X secolo ed in origine ospitava l'ordine benedettino dedicato a Santa Sofia, da cui oggi prende il nome. Dopo la recente ristrutturazione è utilizzato come sede di eventi e mostre. Il complesso di Santa Sofia ospita anno dopo anno mostre di pittori e personaggi di fama internazionale, quali ad esempio Picasso, Miro, Caravaggio, Warhol e Pierluigi Nervi. Non mancano eventi, progetti e mostre legate alle varie organizzazioni e feste pubbliche come il Linea D'Ombra Festival e la Fiera del Crocifisso Ritrovato.
Giardini della Minerva
Dal Complesso di Santa Sofia, continuiamo il nostro itinerario lungo via Torquato Tasso fino a raggiungere il Giardino della Minerva, molto probabilmente la terza cosa più importante da vedere a Salerno. Il giardino dela Minerva è un magnifico orto botanico che nel XII secolo, appartenne alla famiglia di Matteo Silvatico, medico eminente della Scuola Medica Salernitana, ed esperto di piante utilizzate per la produzione di medicinali. I giardini della Minerva si sviluppano lungo l'asse che va dalla Villa Comunale fino al Castello Arechi. Il giardino che oggi si presenta in tutto il suo splendore, fu il primo Giardino Botanico d'Europa per la coltivazioni di pianti a scopo medico.
Davvero i giardini meritano una visita, dunque non perdeteveli!
Villa Comunale
La Villa Comunale di Salerno è il "Giardino" principale della città. La Villa Comunale è sede di diversi eventi durante l'anno, infatti nel mese di Aprile si svolge la tradizionale "Mostra di Minerva", una mostra di piante rare ed oggetti per il giardino. Durante quest'evento nel fine settimana vengono organizzate conferenze, seminari, corsi e workshop sul mondo delle piante, oltre a visite guidate nel vicino Giardino della Minerva. Durante il periodo invernale la Villa si trasforma in un giardino incantato, grazie alle installazioni luminose dell'evento Luci D'Artista, un esposizione di luminarie artistiche che illuminano le strade salernitane per tutto il periodo Natalizio.
DA VEDERE: Un meraviglioso giardino che sorprende e delizia tutti i suoi visitatori sia nella stagione estiva che nella stagione invernale grazie alla sua trasformazione in "Giardino Incantato"
Lungomare di Salerno
Dopo aver visitato la Villa Comunale, ed aver cenato in uno dei graziosi e tipici ristoranti del centro storico di Salerno, come conclusione del nostro tour di Salerno, non possiamo certamente perdere l'opportunità di visitare il giardino più bello di Salerno, il Lungomare di Salerno. Le panchine di fronte al mare offrono una vista mozzafiato sul Golfo di Salerno e sulla Costiera Amalfitana, il luogo perfetto dove potersi rilassare in tutta tranquillità dopo una giornata movimentata.
CONSIGLIO: non c'è posto migliore per innamorarsi.

Arechi Castle
Among the main attractions of Salerno, there is the Arechi Castle in the first place. The view that opens before you, once you reach the top of the castle, will leave you astonished and speechless. From Arechi Castle, which overlooks the Gulf of Salerno, you can enjoy a breathtaking view that stretches from the tip of the Amalfi Coast to Agropoli.

You can reach Castello Arechi, from the central station, either using public transport (bus) or by taxi.
Owned by the Province of Salerno, the castle nowadays presents itself in all its majesty, surrounded by a beautiful park with nature trails immersed in the Mediterranean scrub.
Within an area, recently restored, you will find an exhibition hall, a conference room and a museum that collects ancient materials from the Castle, mostly coins and ceramics.
CURIOSITY: A tragedy by Ugo Foscolo, Ricciarda, is set inside the Arechi Castle.
Medieval Aqueduct
Returning to the city, our tour to discover Salerno in a few hours, will begin at the gates of the historic center. The Medieval Aqueduct, popularly renamed "Ponti del Diavolo", is said to have been built in one night, with the help of demons, by the twelfth-century magician Pietro Barliario. Popular superstition says that venturing under the arches between sunset and dawn would lead to an encounter with demons or evil spirits.
Provincial Gallery of Salerno
Proceeding through one of the main shopping streets of Salerno, or along Via de 'Mercanti, an evocative and ancient road that crosses the entire old city, you can reach the Provincial Art Gallery of Salerno which is on the first floor of the Pinto Palace of the seventeenth century, residence noble of one of the most important families of Salerno. The history of the gallery is actually crucial for the provincial administration of Salerno, committed not only in the recovery in the enhancement of the paintings, but also in the restoration of the building itself. The exhibition inside is divided chronologically into three sections: from the 15th to the 18th century, Salernitani and Costaioli, and Foreign artists.
TIP: You could take advantage of the proximity of the Virtual Museum of the Salerno Medical School for a visit.
Cathedral of Salerno
Leaving the gallery and continuing to the left up to the intersection with Via Duomo, at this point you need to turn right to reach the Cathedral of Salerno which is located in Piazza Alfano I. It is the main place of Catholic worship as well as the second most attraction important of Salerno. The cathedral was built in Romanesque style in the 11th century and subsequently remodeled several times. Inside the cathedral of Salerno you absolutely have to see the crypt.
CURIOSITY: Inside the crypt is kept the stock, where according to tradition, three martyrs were beheaded: Caio, Ante and Fortunato. Legend has it that by putting the ear on it, you can still hear the sound of flowing blood.
Complex of Santa Sofia
Leaving the Duomo, we continue our tour heading towards Piazza Alfano I, once here turning left we will find ourselves in Piazza Abate Conforti, where the famous Monumental Complex of Santa Sofia is located. The complex was built at the end of the 10th century and originally housed the Benedictine order dedicated to Saint Sophia, from which it takes its name today. After the recent renovation it is used as a venue for events and exhibitions. Year after year, the Santa Sofia complex hosts exhibitions of painters and celebrities of international fame, such as Picasso, Miro, Caravaggio, Warhol and Pierluigi Nervi. There is no shortage of events, projects and exhibitions related to various organizations and public parties such as the Linea D'Ombra Festival and the Fiera del Crocifisso Ritrovato.
Minerva' s Gardens
From the complex of Santa Sofia, we continue our itinerary along Via Torquato Tasso until we reach the Giardino della Minerva, probably the third most important thing to see in Salerno. The garden of the Minerva is a magnificent botanical garden that in the 12th century belonged to the family of Matteo Silvatico, eminent physician of the Salerno Medical School, and expert in plants used for the production of medicines. The Minerva gardens develop along the axis that goes from the Villa Comunale to the Castello Arechi. The garden that today presents itself in all its splendor, was the first Botanical Garden of Europe for the cultivation of plants for medical purposes.

Villa Comunale
The Villa Comunale of Salerno is the main "Garden" of the city. The Villa Comunale is home to several events during the year, in fact, in the month of April there is the traditional "Mostra di Minerva", an exhibition of rare plants and garden objects. During this weekend adventure, organize conferences, seminars, courses and workshops on the world of plants, as well as guided tours in the nearby Giardino della Minerva.
